Gum disease can have many causes. The major reason for the development of the disease is the accumulation of bacteria at the gum line in the form of a sticky, yellowish film, which is called dental plaque. If left undisturbed, bacterial plaque calcifies to form dental calculus or tartar, which inflame and damage the gums. Additionally, several factors increase the risk of developing gum disease, the most common of which include:

  • Smoking
  • Drinking a lot of alcohol
  • Lack of enough vitamin and minerals in your diet
  • Diabetes and some other diseases, which can reduce how resistant gums and bones are to damage
  • Hormonal changes during pregnancy and menstruation
  • Malocclusion
  • Incorrect endodontic or prosthodontic treatment
