Teeth Scaling
Teeth scaling is a process of removing plaque, tartar, and bacteria. It is conducted with the use of ultrasonic scaling devices and manual instruments. We use very gentle methods, which are safe for your teeth. Only occasionally, particularly sensitive patients can experience some discomfort.
Tartar, sometimes called calculus, is plaque that has hardened on your teeth. Tartar can also form at and underneath the gumline and can irritate gum tissues. It is a leading cause of decay and gum disease, which is why regular dental visits are so important.
The interval for cleaning can vary between individuals. Usually, it is recommended to conduct teeth scaling twice a year. It allows you to:
- Prevent gum recession and exposure of the tooth neck
- Decrease the risk of periodontitis and tooth loss
- Smoothen the tooth surface and contribute to fresh breath
Airflow Polishing – stain removal
Our Airflow treatment is designed to remove tooth staining caused by red wine, tea, coffee and smoking. Airflow polishing is a new hygiene cleaning treatment that uses a mixture of air, jet water and fine powder to polish and clean your teeth dramatically. This is a modern system which is completely painless and doesn’t damage the enamel. In some cases, a patient may experience a little discomfort, which goes away quickly.
Airflow polishing is a step up from the standard a scaling and polish treatment since it combines the power of a thorough clean with a cosmetic feel! It also cleans the hard to reach places, leaving you feeling very fresh. To get the best results some prior scaling may be required. We will be able to advise you whether or not you need scaling at your appointment.
Although this treatment is not a tooth whitening therapy, the Airflow will significantly improve tooth brightness and give you a noticeably sparkling fresh healthy mouth in an instant. This can be significantly enhanced by tooth whitening
Optimally, the procedure should be performed twice a year.
Fluoride treatment
Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens teeth enamel and reduces the risk of tooth decay by 40%. The fluoride preparation used in the dental office is a much stronger concentration than that in toothpastes or fluoride mouthrinses that may be available in a shop or at a pharmacy. Professional fluoride treatments generally take just a few minutes. The fluoride may be in the form of a gel, foam or varnish.
The fluoride treatment is absolutely painless and does not cause tooth discolouration. It should be conducted twice a year and in children even more frequently, every 3-4 months.
In some cases, fluoride treatment is especially crucial:
- High risk of tooth caries, especially in children
- Wearing of fixed braces
- Exposed tooth necks and hypersensitivity
- Following scaling and Airflow polishing
- Dry mouth
Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are applied to the biting surfaces of the back teeth. The clear plastic coating will harden, creating a barrier that will prevent food from gathering between the cusps. Sealants help keep starches and bacteria from coming into contact with dental enamel and thus protecting teeth from decay.
The application of fissure sealants is a safe, painless and relatively quick procedure. We typically provide these treatments for children. Sealants are often applied as soon as the first permanent teeth start to come through. Although sealants last for years, some will need replacement over time.
